Come and take on a vintage steam train - with your relay team or on your own. The train was beaten in 2017! Let's see if the people can beat her again!

Start at Wellington Station and finish in Ceres (at the amazing Ceres Golf and Eco Estate).

Relay teams to consist of 3 cyclists and 3 runners - all legs are over beautiful off-road terrain. So, great for trail runners and mtb enthusiasts, even for the not-so-experienced, as the route is not highly technical.

Bring the entire family to celebrate afterward you've completed this exciting challenge. There will be live music, great food, and a supervised kiddies village.

A wonderful team-building event or a unique and tough challenge for the solo participants.

If you are interested in buying supporter tickets to take the train, contact the Ceres Rail Company at www.ceresrail.co.za.

In 2017, the event offers a limited team competition for the 170 km. Between 30-50 teams of 6-12 riders will be accommodated in the 170 km event, riding in a team competition similar to the Coronation Double Century and Maluti Double90. Team spots will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Teams will be seeded according to the average seeding eligibility of the team riders, and started with 30 sec to 1 min gaps. The team category will be followed by bunch start groups comprising of individual riders. (Teams that do not get a team entry for the 170 km route but who want to ride together, are welcome to ride together in the seeded group of the lowest-seeded rider in the team, as has been the case in the past.)

The two additional new routes are respectively 109 km and 40 km.

Normal entry fees apply until 30 September. No entries will be taken after 10 October, or at the event. Entries will be capped at 2 500.

Route overview

Starting from the Stellenbosch High School (170 km @ 06h30; 109 km @ 08h15; 58 km @ 09h15), all three routestake in the tough climb over Helshoogte before heading out towards Klapmuts.

While the 58 km follows the R101 to join up with the two longer routes at the R302, the medium and long routes continue towards Voorpaardeberg. The 109 km route turns left at the Windmeul  Winery to join up with the long route on the R302, while the 170 km route continues towards Wellington, Hermon and Riebeeck Kasteel before returning to the venue, joining up with the two shorter routes along the way.

Various cut-offs will be enforced along the way to ensure cyclists will reach the finish before 16h00.

At the finish, various food stalls will offer tasty treats for sale, while massage therapists will take care of tired muscles.

Warmbaths Forever Resort, Bela Bela

6 Aug ’18: Race Report

Ironman 5150 Bela, Bela

Sunday, 4 August 2018
Bela Bela, Limpopo

By Amelia Sheperd-Smith

TIME:  03:00:19
POSITION:  3rd, 40-44

A few months ago, I entered an Ironman event I’d never finished before.  It’s called an Olympic distance and is a 1500m swim, 40 km cycle and 10 km run.

I read somewhere that a month or two out from the Big Event I should do something short to just iron out any last-minute creases, etc.  So I signed up, alongside 955 others, for the Bela Bela 5150, held yesterday in a place called Limpopo, three hours outside of Johannesburg.  I’d need a plane and a bus to get the bike there but, I figured, how hard could it be?

Well, the first crease would be that I didn’t realise that the host resort was on the edge of a game reserve and that my warm-up to the event, the evening beforehand, would involve me startling a warthog that ran away from me as fast as I ran away from it!  God, it was huge!  And not very handsome!

The swim leg was in a dam.  That’s fine except I’ve never swum in a dam before.  Well, not counting when my best friend, Britta and I snuck into the sports shed during the school holidays at The Armidale School in 1986 and ‘borrowed’ a kayak and then fell into a dam and scrambled to shore without it.

The swim start involved 43 of us wading into the water down a muddy bank and lining up, under a bunting line, in the fairly cool water!

On the second lap my goggles were leaking, and I was drinking mouthfuls of muddy water and was so grateful I had one spectator, my friend Adam, on the exit ramp... I couldn’t wait to get out, do a quick wave, get through transition and on the bike and then almost start the event again and pretend the swim leg never happened!

I’d been warned the bike ride was 50 % hills and hard work. But I had more immediate things to fuss over as I had a brain freeze after mounting the bike and forgetting that the loop at the back of my clipped-in-to-the-pedals bike shoes was designed to pull the shoes onto the feet like a shoe horn. I had become flustered after accidentally bumping my watch in transition and losing all its settings and just couldn’t think!

I’m not sure if there’s ever been a cyclist in the history of the event who has cycled through town with their feet still on top of their shoes 2 km into the race. Probably not. I eventually opted for a total reboot and just pedalled off the road into the rubble and started the mount all over again in manual.  And at that moment, like an angel, a lovely woman pedalled by and called out ‘you’re still in the race, you’ve got this!’ And I was so touched...

And so, I restarted the race. For the second time.

In all the hijinks I realised I’d forgotten when to take the energy gels. I knew I had two strapped to my bike and just looked down at them and realised I had to make things up.

Happy on the run course, just because it was the last leg, I smiled as we passed the Warmbaths Resort camping areas and a few of the holidaymakers started to cheer, a bit pissed, waving bottles of beer, while others sat comfortably in deckchairs looking at us all pass like we had two heads. And I get that, because the event had started at 12.30 pm - the heat of the day - and as I ran along, off into the bush, all I could hear was the crunch of the dirt road under my tired feet that were starting to skid as my legs grew heavier.

I could eventually see the faces of the other runners redden in the 29-degree heat and as the course markers blurred I was certain I’d bombed and just had to chalk the whole day up as a learning curve.

Adam and I piled in the car to Pretoria soon after bike collection was allowed, as we’d agreed to meet his wife, Nicky, and colleagues for drinks, and driving up the highway I get the text:

I got a podium finish!

After all that?!!

Murphy’s Law.

An empty spot on the podium, this time, it had to be.

Funny.

This will be my last race before the full Ironman in Italy on September 22nd. I’m happy, grateful, and now, just a bit confused.

Amelia

19 Aug ’18: Race Report

Ironman 70.3 Dun Laoghaire

Dun Laoghaire, Ireland

By Michael Row (6th ,50-54)

TIME: 5:34:11

The event is centred in Dun Laoghaire, an attractive harbour town about 20 mins from Dublin City by train.   It was formerly the port for ferries to the UK, but now is effectively a yacht marina.  But it’s a beautiful spot with views right around Dublin bay.  And there’s a decent range of coffee bars, restaurants and, of course, pubs in the town itself.  Registration takes place in the new library, a dramatic piece of modern architecture that isn’t universally popular.  From here, the transition and the start are about 10 mins walk.

The swim takes place in Scotsman Bay, normally a relatively sheltered bay (less so last Sunday).  You run into the water from a standing start on a small sandy bay.  They allow 4 athletes to go every six seconds.  In comparison to other races, the spacing seemed generous.  The swim route is very straightforward, a long straight section followed by a 90 degree turn towards land and then another to head towards a floating pontoon which is the landing point. Helpers there to assist those struggling to get up on the pontoon.  A short run to T1 and away on the bikes.

So the bike course.  It’s hilly.  But there’s a gentle start with a slight incline out until the village of Enniskerry.  There’s a sharp climb then before it’s rolling terrain into the village of Roundwood.  The climbing gets tougher at this point, with a fairly intimidating climb up to the viewpoint over Lough Tay. Then some descending, flattish terrain and a few technical turns as the course winds its way through the Wicklow mountains. On a clear day, this is a beautiful route (was a bit misty for sightseeing on Sunday).  There’s a very sharp turn as you head  towards Johnnie Foxes pub (claimed to be the highest pub in Ireland).  This is where the route departed from the original plan so in 2019 it may be different (and with more elevation).  Once past the pub, its a nice descent pretty much all the way back to Dun Laoghaire, so I was able to average over 40km/h on the last 25 km or so.  It’s not easy, but I was happy that I chose to take my TT rather than my road bike, which tells you something.  And the hills are pretty well spread out so there’s a decent amount of recovery time between hills.

Onto the run.  Very straightforward, three laps, not completely flat, but fairly modest inclines.  Great level of support throughout, but particularly on the run.  And unlike the Spaniards (at least those in Callela) they don’t only cheer the home team!

The Athletes village was a bit small and crowded; after event food and drinks nothing special, but adequate. Awards ceremony was in the National Yacht Club, which apart from being too small and too hot was a nice spot to wrap up the day.

I really enjoyed and will most probably do it again next year.  Disclaimer: this is my home town so I can’t claim to be completely impartial!
