Western Cape

Four days, two bikes, on-road & off-road. Ride through the picturesque scenery of the Western Cape in this first-ever ultimate cycling experience, from 5 - 8 October 2017.

Cycling history set to be made in South Africa with the Breedenet Cape Duo Challenge

When the world’s first multi discipline multi-stage cycling event takes place in the Western Cape in October it will put to rest an age-old question of who is better on the bike: roadies or mountain bikers?

With South Africa’s fast-growing cycling industry ripe for innovation, the Cape Duo Challenge has a refreshing approach: a four-day, multi-discipline cycling event competing both on and off-road, swapping bicycles for different stages in picturesque locations including Slanghoek Valley, Welvanpas and Bainskloof Pass. Entries are limited to 300 pairs of amateur cyclists.

Founder Peter Diesel-Reynolds and Race Director Ernst Viljoen, both passionate cyclists who know the thrill of a good race, believe cyclists are looking for that X-factor; something exciting, fun and different.  “Races are either road or mountain bike, although many cyclists compete across both disciplines. There has never been a multi day stage race which combines both on- and off-road cycling, with accumulative points.  Additionally, all cyclists are aware of the playful rivalry that exists between ‘roadies’ and mountain bikers, so the Cape Duo Challenge could provide the opportunity to see who the best all-round cyclist is. This race could settle the rivalry once and for all.”

The beneficiary of the Cape Duo Challenge is Ground Level Projects, which provides less fortunate children in grades one to seven with education and transport. “The project has capacity for at least another 100 children and with the money raised by the Cape Duo Challenge, this will become a reality,” he said. “Entering this one of a kind event will help make a different to South Africa’s future.”

Comments race ambassador Lehane Oosthuizen, “A wonderful innovative concept that takes stage racing to a whole new level. Interesting, challenging and at the heart of it, it gives back to the community. What more can you ask for? I can't wait for the Cape Duo!"

The multi-stage cycling event is sanctioned by the Pedal Power Association and takes place from Thursday, 5 October to Sunday, 8 October 2017 at a cost of R9 950 per team. Enter your team at www.capeduo.com. Closing date for entries is 10 September 2017.

The Otter Challenge is the event for the more social Trail Runner, who doesn’t only want to achieve to run the OTTER in 1 day only, but who also wants to enjoy him/herself out there and maybe even catch a glimpse of the stunning scenery. But don’t think it is a walk in the park. Otter Challenge athletes have no other advantage than a little bit more time – the trail starts and finishes at the same points as the OTTER Run, it covers exactly the same distance  and the same gain in altitude !

Which is the harder course, the Otter Retto or the Otter Classic?

Feedback from runners who have done both courses overwhelmingly seemed to indicate that most found the Retto course the harder of the two. Negotiating the treacherous Waterfall section between Ngubu Hut and Storms River Rest Camp with tired legs seemed to be the most common reason cited for the perceived difference but the different gradients of the climbs was also suggested.

The Otter Medal comes in different colour ribbonsEach colour denotes a finishing time.

REGISTERING ON BEHALF OF SOMEONE ELSE:

Please note that, while we do allow friends to register on behalf of other athletes, we have experienced some issues with this in the past:

  • The wrong number being given to the wrong athlete - creates havoc with results
  • Race goodies going missing - we take no responsibility for this

We have also had one person turn up to register for five or more people at a time. Please bear in mind that we may ask a person attempting to handle bulk registrations of five or more to step aside and allow others waiting in the queue to be served first.

RACE BRIEFING
Race briefing will take place 15min before the swim start of each batch in the swim start area
Remember that it is the athlete's responsibility to know the route (escape plan) and rules prior to the race.

Route Description:

New Route
The new flat route is two laps of the Tokai Greenbelt - a mix of road and single track.
The route is not suitable for prams or wheelchairs.
______________________________
Old Route
Starting at the Porter School, this race follows a sand road past the historic Tokai Manor House. You then wind up through Tokai State Forest and back to the school. Make no mistake this is a tough climb, but the stunning views will more than compensate for the effort. The entire route covers a combination of roads, cross-country stretches and contour paths. There are patches of loose gravel so you are best advised to slow down and enjoy the surrounding forest on the descent.
