Route Description:
Difficulty Rating: 4. Route Type: Circular
This beautiful race first runs through Simon’s Town on the coastal road for about three kilometres before turning westwards towards Red Hill. Brace yourself for a climb that is usually reserved for Argus cyclists. The hill is about five kilometres long and will test both the body and the mind. There are breathtaking views of False Bay from here. Take your time; this is the Cape at its finest. The three kilometre run down the other side is a welcome relief as you head down to the Atlantic coast.

Enjoy this most stunning part of the peninsula, fairly flat running for about nine kilometres along the road bordering the Cape Point Nature Reserve. At the entrance to the park the route takes a northward turn and drops to sea level for around four kilometres. The last six kilometres are fairly flat, but include a nasty but very slight climb at the 28-kilometre marker back into the finish in Simon’s Town.

Warmbaths Forever Resort, Bela Bela

6 Aug ’18: Race Report

Ironman 5150 Bela, Bela

Sunday, 4 August 2018
Bela Bela, Limpopo

By Amelia Sheperd-Smith

TIME:  03:00:19
POSITION:  3rd, 40-44

A few months ago, I entered an Ironman event I’d never finished before.  It’s called an Olympic distance and is a 1500m swim, 40 km cycle and 10 km run.

I read somewhere that a month or two out from the Big Event I should do something short to just iron out any last-minute creases, etc.  So I signed up, alongside 955 others, for the Bela Bela 5150, held yesterday in a place called Limpopo, three hours outside of Johannesburg.  I’d need a plane and a bus to get the bike there but, I figured, how hard could it be?

Well, the first crease would be that I didn’t realise that the host resort was on the edge of a game reserve and that my warm-up to the event, the evening beforehand, would involve me startling a warthog that ran away from me as fast as I ran away from it!  God, it was huge!  And not very handsome!

The swim leg was in a dam.  That’s fine except I’ve never swum in a dam before.  Well, not counting when my best friend, Britta and I snuck into the sports shed during the school holidays at The Armidale School in 1986 and ‘borrowed’ a kayak and then fell into a dam and scrambled to shore without it.

The swim start involved 43 of us wading into the water down a muddy bank and lining up, under a bunting line, in the fairly cool water!

On the second lap my goggles were leaking, and I was drinking mouthfuls of muddy water and was so grateful I had one spectator, my friend Adam, on the exit ramp... I couldn’t wait to get out, do a quick wave, get through transition and on the bike and then almost start the event again and pretend the swim leg never happened!

I’d been warned the bike ride was 50 % hills and hard work. But I had more immediate things to fuss over as I had a brain freeze after mounting the bike and forgetting that the loop at the back of my clipped-in-to-the-pedals bike shoes was designed to pull the shoes onto the feet like a shoe horn. I had become flustered after accidentally bumping my watch in transition and losing all its settings and just couldn’t think!

I’m not sure if there’s ever been a cyclist in the history of the event who has cycled through town with their feet still on top of their shoes 2 km into the race. Probably not. I eventually opted for a total reboot and just pedalled off the road into the rubble and started the mount all over again in manual.  And at that moment, like an angel, a lovely woman pedalled by and called out ‘you’re still in the race, you’ve got this!’ And I was so touched...

And so, I restarted the race. For the second time.

In all the hijinks I realised I’d forgotten when to take the energy gels. I knew I had two strapped to my bike and just looked down at them and realised I had to make things up.

Happy on the run course, just because it was the last leg, I smiled as we passed the Warmbaths Resort camping areas and a few of the holidaymakers started to cheer, a bit pissed, waving bottles of beer, while others sat comfortably in deckchairs looking at us all pass like we had two heads. And I get that, because the event had started at 12.30 pm - the heat of the day - and as I ran along, off into the bush, all I could hear was the crunch of the dirt road under my tired feet that were starting to skid as my legs grew heavier.

I could eventually see the faces of the other runners redden in the 29-degree heat and as the course markers blurred I was certain I’d bombed and just had to chalk the whole day up as a learning curve.

Adam and I piled in the car to Pretoria soon after bike collection was allowed, as we’d agreed to meet his wife, Nicky, and colleagues for drinks, and driving up the highway I get the text:

I got a podium finish!

After all that?!!

Murphy’s Law.

An empty spot on the podium, this time, it had to be.

Funny.

This will be my last race before the full Ironman in Italy on September 22nd. I’m happy, grateful, and now, just a bit confused.

Amelia

The Ride2nowhere is the perfect race where Racing Snakes and Weekend Warriors meet to compete for Fun!

Long (60km per day) and Short (40km per day) route options makes it the ideal race to dust off the Winter cob webs and get ready for the Spring season.

One of the big draw cards of the Ride2nowhere is relaxed atmosphere at the race village and between riders. The local community gets involved and also benefits from the event by providing local hospitality and entertainment to participants through out the weekend.

The Ride2nowhere route offers challenge and reward for experienced riders as well as weekend warriors. The route follows a cloverleaf format with each day’s starts & finish from the same venue in McGregor.

With relatively short riding times per day it meant that riders will finish by lunch time, leaving plenty time to experience the charm of McGregor with their loved ones during the afternoon.

More or less 55% of the daily route is on open gravel roads or jeep tracks, with a good combination of flat, rolling hills and one or two steeper climbs. 45% of the daily route is single track, cattle paths or naturally eroded tracks. The terrain is mostly hard rock formation and few loose gravel sections. (No crazy stuff, just mother nature providing us with some fun tracks and trails!)

THE BIG WALK WILL NOT BE STAGED IN 2014 DUE TO LACK OF SUFFICIENT SPONSORSHIP

The Big Walk, Cape Town's oldest and biggest mass participation sporting event, held annually in November, will unfortunately not be staged this year, due to a lack of sufficient sponsorship.

The Big Walk, now in its 111th year has been a major charity driver in the City and one that has contributed in excess of R1m per annum to the upliftment and development of our communities. “The primary objective of the Big Walk is to generate funds for charity, says the Big Walk Trust Chairman Gerald Ponte. While the decision not to stage the event is sad, it is as a result of intense deliberations and the main reason for this decision is that without sufficient sponsorship, it is not viable to stage an event that meets our primary objective”, says Ponte. We simply cannot expect our walkers to pay an entry fee to a charity event which would not meet its charity objective.

The Otter Challenge is the event for the more social Trail Runner, who doesn’t only want to achieve to run the OTTER in 1 day only, but who also wants to enjoy him/herself out there and maybe even catch a glimpse of the stunning scenery. But don’t think it is a walk in the park. Otter Challenge athletes have no other advantage than a little bit more time – the trail starts and finishes at the same points as the OTTER Run, it covers exactly the same distance  and the same gain in altitude !

Which is the harder course, the Otter Retto or the Otter Classic?

Feedback from runners who have done both courses overwhelmingly seemed to indicate that most found the Retto course the harder of the two. Negotiating the treacherous Waterfall section between Ngubu Hut and Storms River Rest Camp with tired legs seemed to be the most common reason cited for the perceived difference but the different gradients of the climbs was also suggested.

The Otter Medal comes in different colour ribbonsEach colour denotes a finishing time.
