NEWS:

WP Triathlon AGM
The Western Province Triathlon Association (WPTA) Annual General Meeting, which took place on 19 January 2016, could not proceed as a quorum of registered members was not present.  A Special General Meeting will be scheduled within the next couple of weeks.  As most of the current WPTA committee members will not stand for the coming two year term, the present committee called for volunteers to come forward and form an action group to establish the new committee.  This group will meet on Tuesday, 2 February, after which the SGM will be scheduled.  If you are interested in being part of this group, or the new committee, please contact us for details of the upcoming meeting.

Guides for Blind Athletes
Over the past couple of months Carla Lever has been volunteering as a guide for blind athletes at the League of Friends of the Blind (LOFOB) in Grassy Park. LOFOB is a live-in facility where blind people are taught braille, life skills and other basic job training.  There are some facilities for physical exercise but for most of the athletes this is impossible without a guide.  Carla is heading back to Sydney to finish her final semester of studies and she is looking for someone help keep her guys going.
How can you help?
Mondays, 13:00-14:00:  Run an informal gym class for all the adult residents (between 7 and 14 people).  There are some volunteers already but an extra hand is always useful.
Mondays and / or Wednesdays 18:00-19:00:  Take John, a 60 year old runner who Carla has been working with, for an 8km jog with the ARD running club.  John lost his eyesight during a mugging finds exercise a huge motivator.  There are so many other guys who'd love an opportunity to go for a 'real' run, but each runner requires a guide so a lot more guides are needed.  No skills required other than vision.
If you are able to help, please email carlalever@gmail.com

Gynaecology Study
Candice Morrison is doing a study, to be published in a medical journal, on pelvic floor dysfunction / prolapse and athletes.  Apparently long distance running has been found to weaken the pelvic floor and put women at risk for urinary incontinence and prolapse at a later stage.  This study will focus on what effect doing triathlons would have on the above conditions.  It is an interesting study, which has been done in America and with Triathlons gaining such popularity in South Africa we have plenty of female athletes to include in the study.

Female athletes are requested to participate in the study by completing the on-line survey at:  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Pelvicfloorstudy  All responses are done anonymously.

RESULTS:

Ironman 70.3 SA
Congratulations to everyone who completed Ironman 70.3 Buffalo City!  As per usual the weather ensured that the 9th edition of this event remained one of the most difficult 70.3 races in the World.  There are over 90 Ironman 70.3 events every year and surveys always place the Buffalo City event amongst the top 10 most difficult.

Last Sunday, swimmers were welcomed into the relatively flat water and gentle currents but had to pay back double after the turn at the furthest buoy brought a stiff head wind and choppy water.  The brutal bike course usually takes most of the casualties and this year was set to be no different with a nasty head-wind all the way to the turn-around point, causing many a rider grave concern.  Luckily, for the first time ever, there was some tail-wind on the return leg, allowing riders to make up some time and avoid the cut-off.    The run was hot!  The event was aptly described as a ¾ Ironman by female pro winner, Jody Swallow

All the ATC members’ results appear at the bottom of this email.  Special congratulations to Dean Hopf, 3rd 30-34; Jenny Nel, 3rd 35-49 AG; and Bettina Van Wyk, 3rd 50-54.

DisEmbark
Embark had its annual DIS-Embark awards evening on Saturday to recognise outstanding performances and improvements amongst the triathletes who followed the Ironman 70.3 program for the Buffalo City event.  Follow the link below to read the full report on the awards, bloopers and outstanding athletes at "DisEmbark":  http://www.embark.co.za/index.php/2016/01/31/our-dis-embark-awards-for-our-70-3-athletes/

Red Hill Marathon
Congratulations to all the ATC’ers who did the Red Hill Marathon and Classic and qualified to run an Ultra Marathon.  The results are not available yet and we will publish these as soon as it becomes available.

WP OW Champs
There have been great results from ATC’ers at the WP Aquatics Open Water Championships held on the weekend.  We will publish those as soon as we have gathered the results.

Cape Summer Trail Series
In the third event of the Spur Cape Summer Trail Series, held in Kirstenbosch Gardens on Tuesday, Dawood Goeiman was 2nd in the Senior category.   Daniel Arendse and Bruzano Britz were 2nd and 3rd, respectively, in the Junior category.

Kate Mapham was the second lady in the Long Course Challenge of this series and also won the Kloof Nek Classic Half Marathon on Sunday!

Oak Valley 24-Hour Enduro
Congratulations Team Da Hui, with Bryan Nicholson, Jean de Villiers, Charl de Villiers and Greg Goodall, who won the Dirtopia 24 Hours of Oak Valley Endurance Mountain Biking Team event.

TRAINING THIS WEEK:  Details here...

SWIM:  The Canal Swim will be on Friday morning at 06:00.

BIKE:  This week we will start our mid-week rides again on a Thursday morning at 05:30 from the Point Virgin Active.  It is still dark at that time so bring a bike light.  There will be a long ride on Sunday, from Point Virgin Active, leaving at 06:00.

Ironman SA Training Rides
From now until April we will team up with Embark to offer supported long training rides for those training for Ironman or other endurance events.  A support vehicle will follow the group to offer assistance with mechanicals and to transport extra nutrition.  We will ask for a contribution of R50 per ride to pay the driver and fuel.  Plans for each ride will be communicated in our weekly newsletter and published on our training page.

RUN:  Our track sessions will take place on Tuesday mornings at 06:00 and Wednesday evenings at 18:00.  The ATC office will also be open before and after the sessions.  This week we will be doing our monthly 5 Km Time Trials.  All runners who participate on Tuesday morning or Wednesday afternoon, stand a chance to win awesome lucky draw prizes.  The draw will take place after the Wednesday evening Time Trial.

Weekend Long Runs
We will also host a couple of supported long runs leading up to Two Oceans and Comrades.  These will depend on other events taking place on weekends, so we will communicate dates and times in our weekly newsletter.
TRI: Ironman SA PE – Training
Embark’s Ironman Training Program continues after 70.3 East London with a 10-Week program focussing on the Full Ironman event taking place in April.  Ironman athletes will be coached by Ironman certified coaches, STeve Attwell and Jono Rumbelow.  The program starts on Tuesday, the 2nd of February.

EVENTS:  Details here...

Thursday, 4 February, is World Cancer Day and the annual Lace Up For Cancer race will take place from Mouille Point with six different cancer organisations joining forces to raise awareness of the fight against cancer.  The charities include: Love Your Nuts, Choc, People Living with Cancer, HPCA, Sunflower Fund and CANSA.  The race will start at 18:30 with families mingling around the grassy parks before and afterwards to enjoy the entertainment and food on offer.  And you can dress up in weird and wacky ways to support those living with cancer or in memory of loved ones who have passed away.

On Friday, the second event in the Biathle series will be held at the Rustenburg Girls High School in Rondebosch.

The Cape Town Tens tournament takes place from Thursday till Saturday in Green Point (GPCC, Hamiltons, etc.).  So bear this in mind when planning training in and around the Green Point area.

The Lion of Africa Half Marathon takes place on Saturday from the Cape Academy, Constantia.  Entries close today at 17:00.  Note that there are no late entries for the Half Marathon at registration venues or on the day.  Late entries are for the 6 Km fun run only.  We will set up the ATC Gazebo in the finish area so please come and say hello.  You can also collect 2016 ASA licenses before and after the run.

The 99ner Road Bike Fun Ride takes place on Saturday from the Durbanville Race Course.
The Simonsberg Contour Mountain Bike Stage race will continue this coming weekend despite the devastation caused by recent fires.  Routes and distances will be adjusted accordingly and organisers reported that funds raised by the event are needed to repair damages to trails and paths.  There are still a couple of entries available at:  www.dirtopia.co.za/index.php/fairtree-simonsberg-contour
The PPA Scenic South Fun Ride takes place in Fish Hoek on Sunday.
The Momentum Grape Mountain Bike Ride is a fun addition to the annual Stellenbosch Wine Festival promising a fun cycling outing towards Jonkershoek and back.

The Sanlam Cape Mile Open Water Swim takes place on Sunday in the Eikenhof Dam, Grabouw.  Jessica Cloete, Vivienne Williams and Karen Graaf will attempt to swim all 5 mile waves.  We wish them good luck with this.

FUTURE EVENTS:

Westcoast Warm Water Weekend
Entries for the West Coast Warm Water Weekend have opened.  Race organisers have offered ATC and Embark members a special discount, which is provided through a voucher code on the on-line entry system.  We have sent the code to all active ATC Members so if you have not received it, please reply to this email and request one.  The code must be provided before you enter as the discount will not be applied to entries already done.  If you would like to stay over in the stables at Geelbek, let us know as we have requested a block booking.

Daredevil Run
The annual Daredevil Speedo Run will take place on Friday 19 February at 15:00 from the Mouille Point Lighthouse.  The idea is to get as many runners as possible to put on a Purple speedos and then wobble down the Green Point Promenade and back to the Lighthouse.
The run is in aid of creating cancer awareness and R100 of the entry fee goes to various charities involved in combating cancer.  All event expenses are carried by the sponsor, Hollard.  CANSA will also be present on the day to do quick pin prick cancer tests.

Enjoy the week!
