IM703 BC Results – Discovery ITU – WC / CTUTA / SA Champs – ATC AGM ‘18

NEWS:

Ironman TriClub Champs at 70. 3 Buffalo City
We are the Ironman TriCLub Division II Champs for Ironman 70.3 South Africa!  Thanks to valuable points collected by members who have signed up under the TriClub ATC - Atlantic Triathlon Club.  We’ve had many questions about how the TriClub Divisions work.  There are five Divisions, split according to number of registered Triathletes who participate in Ironman events (any distance).  Division I is for over 200 athletes.  ATC (Division II, 126-199) has way over 200 Triathletes and, in a given year, we will have more than 200 athletes doing an Ironman event.  Unfortunately, not all our members doing Ironman events have registered for the TriClub program, or, have registered under another “TriClub” (MPG, MTD, etc).  We don’t have a problem with members wanting to support their training groups but would like to motivate members who have not joined the TriClub program to sign up.

Signing up is free and there are some great benefits, varying from event to event, such as:  Priority racking (great for the older age categories), special race caps, club area, etc.  Late last year TriClub introduced free entries based on the number of TriClub entrants.

Through this, ATC has benefited from three entries for the Half Ironman 70. 3 Buffalo City and two for Ironman SA Port Elizabeth.  There isn’t much time between these entries becoming available and race entries closing / filling up so careful planning will be required to maximise benefit from this and to ensure that loyal athletes, who enter early so we can rack up the numbers, also get some benefit.   So, going forward, we will use some of the funds generated to reward loyal TriClub point scorers:
We will make the entries available to athletes who have not entered yet for a reasonable donation.  We will then have a lucky draw for entrants who entered before the TriClub cut-off date.  Selected entrants will then receive funds to contribute towards their next Ironman event entry fee.  This will also support the aim behind this benefit, which is to encourage and reward participation in Ironman events.

ATC Summer Sunset Team Time Trial
We had to take the difficult decision to cancel the ATC SS TTT, scheduled for 21 February 2018.  There were several reasons, most notably, the other events taking place in the area at that time and escalating costs of the event.  The race scheduled for 17 October will go ahead as planned.

ATC AGM 2018
Early heads-up!  Our Annual General Meeting will be held on Wednesday 21 March 2018.  We anticipate that our Constitution will require extensive changes to enable our formal registration as a Not for Profit company.  There are also positions available on the Committee.  So, please pencil in this date in the meantime.  We will provide further details in due course.

ATC Awards 2017
We will have our Awards Function in June this year.  At our 10-Year anniversary we announced that previous recipients of our flagship performance awards are eligible again for the next 10-year cycle.  We will also change the award period from the former period of October-September to the calendar year.  This is an attempt to make awards more current.  Nominations for awards will open shortly.

WCTA / CTUTA Team Selection and Champs
As communicated by the Cape Town Unicity Triathlon Association (CTUTA) earlier in the season, all TSA / CTUTA sanctioned events in the Western Cape will be used as selection races for the Team to represent CTUTA at Nationals.  CTUTA has opened applications for team selection and you are therefore encouraged to check the WCTA Results Pages to confirm that your results for the season have been recorded correctly.  Only holders of valid 2018 TSA Full Racing Licenses will be considered for the team.

To apply for a slot in the team, please click here to submit your application.  Applications close at 17:00 on 21 February 2018.

The 2018 SA Triathlon Championships, African Cup and Paratriathlon will be held on the 17th and 18th of March 2018.  It will be hosted by Free State Triathlon, near Bloemfontein.  There will also be a SA Sprint Distance Championship for senior age groups and this will be the selection race for Sprint Worlds.  Senior Age Group Triathletes can compete in the Sprint and Standard Championships and can only be selected based on the events they race.  (i.e. an athlete cannot enter the sprint event and be selected for the standard event or vice-versa)

The 2018 CTUTA District Triathlon Championships will be held in conjunction with the Westcoast Warmwater Weekend on Saturday 24 March.  Triathletes can choose between:
The Standard Triathlon Championship:  1.5 Km Swim – 42 Km Bike - 10.5 Km Trail Run (Starts at 8:30 am).
The Sprint Triathlon Championship: For Juniors and All Age Groups.  750m Swim – 20 Km Bike – 6 Km Trail Run (Starts at 8:50 am).  This is the first year that a WCTA / CTUTA Sprint Championships will be held.  For future seasons CTUTA will look at separate events to enable Age Groupers to compete in both.

Due to the fact that this event will take place after 2018 SA Champs, it will not be a selection event for Nationals.  Nor for Nationals 2019.

RESULTS:  Details here...

Ironman 70. 3 Buffalo City
Just when we thought we were going to have a nice cool run in light rain, the dreaded headwind on the return leg returned, blew away all the clouds, and delivered a sunny, hot run leg.  East London always delivers to ensure that at Ironman 70.3 South Africa Buffalo City finishers can claim completing one of the toughest 70.3 events in the World.  Competition was tough this year with athletes vying for slots to Ironman 70.3 World Championships, to be held in Port Elizabeth later this year.  ATC’ers delivered some great results and we congratulate the following on claiming their slots:  Rohan Meyer, Bjorn Pienaar, Marco Stichini, Jonty Low, Tyron Ingle, Alexandra Antonakis, Linda Detering, Bettina Van Wyk and Kirsty Blackford.

Apart from most of the ATC’ers present at the award ceremony, who went on stage to claim the Ironman TriCLub Division II Champs Trophy, the following made individual appearances in their age categories:  Rohan Meyer (3rd 25-29), Annah Watkinson (5th Lady, Pro), Alexandra Antonakis (2nd 30-34), Linda Detering (2nd 18-24) and Bettina Van Wyk (2nd 55-59).  Congratulations to these members and all the ATC’ers who completed the event.

All our finishers can be viewed on our On-Line Results Blog, you can view more detailed results and also see if you are registered for Ironman TriCLub under ATC.

Bay2Bay
Over 80 ATC’ers tackled the Nutribullet Bay to Bay 30 and 15 Km Runs on the 14th of January, split evenly across both distances.  Many of these members trained with our ASA accredited coach Garth Dorman, either through the Tuesday and Wednesday track sessions, or though the Embark training program, which ran 4 days a week, in a group-coached group environment, in and around the Atlantic Seaboard. The first ATC’er home in the 30 Km was Shawn Gregory (2:06:39) followed closely by Aubrey Makhubo (West Coast) in 2:07.  In the 15 Km race, Brenton Ashby was the first ATC’er in 1:06:47 (2nd 45-49).  All the ATC’ers results are listed on our Blog Page.  These are only the runners who entered under the ATC Running Club.  Members who ran in other club colours, or as Temps, are welcome to forward their results and we will add it to the blog.

Congratulations to Angelique Moller, who won the Junior Ladies race at the Free State Provincial Championships earlier this year.  According to her coach, Jono Rumbelow, she won the ladies race hands down!  Congratulations Angelique.
