Get Active Weekend – Ironman 70.3 EL - Results – WP Triathlon Team

NEWS:

Another busy and exciting month has passed with some fantastic results and achievements from our members.  One Ironman 70.3, two Marathon qualifiers and many miles of swimming are behind us.  Next up is XTERRA SA Champs, March will see the Cape Town Cycle Tour, Cape Epic, SA TRI Champs and frantic training for Ironman SA and Two Oceans.

ATC Office
We are receiving a lot of emails from members asking where they can collect their licenses and gear from.  So, firstly, a reminder, that the ATC Office is open in the ATC Container on Tuesday mornings from 06:00 till 07:30 and on Wednesday evenings from 17:00 till 19:30.  You can also collect licenses and gear at the Friday morning canal swim or any other scheduled training session.  The information on our website is current and (mostly) accurate.

ASA Licenses
Please note:
YOU MAY NO LONGER WEAR YOUR 2016 ASA LICENSE.  Please collect your 2017 license from us before your next event.
YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO WEAR BOTH 2017 LICENSE NUMBERS.  You can put the event race number over the ASA Bib, as long as it does not cover the sponsors’ name at the top of the bib.  See the image further down in this email.

WPA Communique re ASA License
The following communique was received from WPA on 13 February 2017, with respect to objections rasied about 2017 ASA Licenses:
“Western Province Athletics (WPA) acknowledges the numerous submissions received from both members and clubs objecting to the use, and display, of the National Lotteries Commission logo on the 2017 ASA Licence. All these submissions have, and are, being collated and forwarded to our National body, Athletics South Africa (ASA).

It is important to note that matters pertaining to the licence sponsor, and the Rules and Regulations governing the display of the said licence, is an ASA competency and not a Provincial competency. We have however articulated very strongly the views of our membership to our National body and await their official response. This will be communicated when received.

Members have also enquired about the current requirement, contained within the ASA Licence form and ASA online system; requesting confirmation of members’ demographics. This has been included in order to comply with the requirement of the Department of Sport and Recreation SA, in their quest to fulfil the mandate of the National Sport and Recreation Plan. This information is therefore only being used for statistical purposes. More information is available on the Ministries website: http://www.srsa.gov.za/

Issued by Western Province Athletics (WPA)”

WPA have instructed officials at sanctioned events to exercise utmost restraint when applying the new ASA rules.

RESULTS:

Ironman 70.3 Buffalo City
The weekend in East London did not disappoint and we had a great time with all the ATC’ers!  After some adverse weather and sea conditions on the days leading up to the event, race day arrived with near-perfect conditions (well, for East London).  The sea wasn’t particularly rough but the swim seemed slow.  The bike demanded its dues on the way out but there was some pay-back tailwind on the return.  The run was, as always, hot and tough!
Congratulations to Rohan Meyer (4:45) and Olivia Bird (5:23) who are the ATC Ironman 70.3 Champs for 2017!  Henry Wolstenholme (5:18) was 3rd in the 50-54 AG.  Jenny Close (5:29) was 3rd in the 40-44 AG and Arné Van Rensburg (5:44) won the 18-24 AG.  Sharon Allen (8:16), doing her 2nd triathlon ever, was 3rd in the 60-65 AG.

Rudi Oosthuizen (5:20) accepted his slot for Wolds and will be joining his wife Alice Oosthuizen at the Ironman 70.3 World Championships, to be held in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in September.  Alice qualified last year at Ironman 70.3 Pula.

All the ATC’er’s results are further down in this post.  You can also view more detailed results on the ATC Blog

DisEmbark
Embark Atlantic Sea Board held its post Ironman 70.3 DisEmbark function on 4 February.   Amongst many fines issued for peculiar behaviour during the training, the following triathletes were rewarded for their performances at the race:  Rudolph Oosthuizen (Best Performing Male Athlete), Genine Manchip (Best Performing Female Athlete), Kelly Styane (Most Improved) and Kevin McKinney (Dark Horse).

Discovery Get Active Weekend
The Discovery Cape Town Triathlon and Duathlon made for a very exiting weekend of Multisport.  Making up a quarter of the field in the Triathlon, dominating the team placings and winning both ladies standard distance events, means ATC had a fantastic weekend at the races.  The cherry on the top was watching Richard Murray and fellow South African’s Henri Schoeman and Wian Sullwald, fill the podium at the Pro’s ITU World Cup race on Saturday afternoon.

Our individuals and teams performed as follows:
Standard Triathlon: Rohan Meyer (19-29) was 3rd overall and won the 19-29 AG.  Michelle Krebs won the ladies race.  Dean Hopf was 4th overall (2nd, 30-39) and Iain McGregor won the 40-49 AG.  Alex Antonakis was 3rd in the 30-30 AG and Emma Alsop was 2nd in the 40-49 AG with Lesyl Potgieter in 3rdVenetia Landman was 2nd in the 50-59 AG and Neil Morgan was 2nd in the 60+ AG.
Team Atlantic Triathlon Club with Jay Richards, Jarryd Haley and Evan Fortuin was second in the team competition.

Sprint Triathlon:  Team ATC Sprinters, with Darrin Hofmeyr, Colin Van Zyl and Daniel Arendse was the fastest team.

Standard Duathlon:  Rohan Kennedy won overall and Kelly Styane won the ladies race.  Henry Wolstenholme won the 50-59 AG and Brenton Ashby was 3rd in the 40-49 AG.
Team Atlantic Triathlon Club with Evan Fortuin and Emce Van Zyl was the fastest team.

Sprint Duathlon:  Nolan Steele was 3rd overall and Colin Van Zyl was 2nd in the 40+ AG.
Team ATC Multisport, with Bruzano Britz and Coenraad Hefer was the fastest team. Team ATC Sprinters, with Owen Jansen and Darrin Hofmeyr was 2nd, followed by Team ATC Sprint 5 (Gabrian Prins and Jon-Luca Del Fante) and Team ATC Sprint 3 (Estin Everts and Nick Turner)

Super Sprint Duathlon:  Daniel Arendse, doing his first Duathlon ever, came 3rd overall.  Daniel only received the bicycle he used, which was kindly donated to us by Phillip Lotter, the day before the event.
Team ATC Super Sprint 3, with Casedy Rudolph and Rudi Oosthuizen was the fastest team.  Team ATC Super Sprint 2, with Shamodean Koonthea and Russell Smedley was 2nd followed by team ATC Super Sprint 1 (Junior Beukes and Gert Wilkins).

BIKE:  On Thursday morning, at 05:30, we will do a road bike ride from Point Virgin Active.
On Saturday we will have a support vehicle accompany us on our training ride.  All members are welcome to join in but please bring R50 to contribute towards fuel and the driver
Please arrive at the Paddocks Shopping Centre by 05:30 and be ready to ride at 05:45.

We will ride from the Paddocks through Durbanville, past the Silos, along the R312 to Klein-Joostenberg and then along the R101 to Klapmuts.  From there we will follow the familiar Simonsberg road route to Franschoek and turn around at the Huguenot Monument.  We will return the same way.

The support vehicle is the ATC Ranger.  Please ensure that you have ATC Admin (0733083127) on WhatsApp.  This route is 180 Kms:  http://www.mappedometer.com/?maproute=587772

If you are doing the brick, bring a lock to secure your bike during the run.  The support driver will leave after the ride so there will not be anyone watching the bikes.

Cape Town Cycle Tour Entries
There are still charity entries available for the Cape Town Cycle Tour (Argus).  Entries, in aid of St Luke’s Hospice, are available for R1500, which can be paid off over time.  Reply to this email if you are keen.  Substitutions for entries close this Friday, 24 February.

Bike Fix
With the Cycle Tour around the corner, bike shops are getting busy and it will become difficult to get a booking for a bike service.  Bike Fix, the mobile bicycle maintenance company who assisted us on Saturday before the Discovery Triathlon, will collect your bike, do the necessary and deliver it back to you.  This is done at a preferential rate to ATC Members.   For more details or to book a service:  www.bikefix.co.za  info@bikefix.co.za
