6 Jul '15: ATC RESULTS Ironman 70.3 Durban

It seems like June wasn’t a good month for Ironman swims.  At Ironman 70.3 Durban the swim was cancelled for Age Groupers due to a rough sea with big swell and dangerous rip curents.  At Ironman 70.3 Luxembourg the swim was cancelled due to a flooding river.  At Ironman 70.3 Pescara, in Italy, the swim was called off after the first couple of swim waves had already started, the race was neutralised and re-started as a Duathlon.  ATC had participants at all these events and did an on-line survey to gauge how this affected their races and performance.  Feedback from this survey can be viewed further down in this post.

Swim or no Swim, ATC'er raced with enthusiasm and delivered some brilliant performances, including top age grouper performances under the males and ladies!  Congratulations to all members who finished these events.

How did the non-Swim affect your race?  Or how do you think your result would have differed if there had been a swim?

Dean Hopf
The race became a joke with drafting everywhere, a lack of organization and poor implementation of bike start order.
Berna Coetzee
It doesn't feel like I did an Ironman 70.3 due to no swim. It feels like half a race.
Ed Beukes
I had to change my thinking fast, because the memories of cold swims and pool sprints over the last 6 months flooded my mind. However, once I made peace with it and settled my heart on taking on the biggest duathlon I have ever done... The excitement was back. Naturally I really wanted to test my abilities in all three disciplines, but as I said, I had to make peace with it. Just sad that I am now an 'Ironman' but not really an 'Ironman'... Because the fact of the matter remains, there was no swim.
Douglas Burger
Not much different.
Karla Ray
Having been sick, I might have suffered on the swim - so it probably worked in my favour
Nick Turner
Anti-climax. Expensive for a duathlon! Silly choice of venue as it will be cancelled every second year on current standards.
Emma Alsop
I think I would have placed higher, but I think that for us amateurs, it’s the taking part and camaraderie that make the day. Some people say it’s all about the run/bike. It’s actually about all three, but always about the one that you’re the worst at!!! So for me running!!!
Ian Thompson
Don't think it did
Carl May
It was naturally shorter I think I would have done better than 24th in my age group if the swim was included
Carl May
I think I would have done even better if the swim was included
Dawn Clarke
Positive as I knew I could do better then.
Malcolm Rapson
Slightly tougher.
Rich Lain
Position probably better overall.
Charles Norris
Don't think it had a big effect on me
Angelique Edwards
I think the race would have been a lot tougher and wouldn't have felt as strong on the run.
Jeleze Hattingh
Usually the Swim settles me in for the race. Had to re-motivate myself.
Crispin Barrett
Frame of mind was off, so IT affected my end game.
Colin Van Zyl
Stuck to game plan so was happy.
JP Labuschagbe
Unsure
Genelle Van Der Riet
No
Jef Claessen
Faster bike
Stephanie Smit
Don't think the end result would have been much different. We just started later causing us to run in the hottest part of the day.
Kirsty Blackford
I wanted to beat last year’s time. I am hoping I would still have got similar times but hard to compare.
Lisa Pereira
Chomping at the bit, so started too fast on the bike.
Vasili Vass
I don't know.
Jonty Low
I am a strong swimmer.
Megan Petersen
I would have been even slower!
Mario Santana
Made the event a Bike Race in essence, afforded me the opportunity to go harder in the event I'm strongest in.
Melissa Groenink
Waited about an hour in the bike queue to start.  Probably started quicker on the bike, eventually.
Gerhard Kotze
Went out on bike too hard.
Donald Duncan
Poor swimmer therefore further back in field.
Clive Schulze
Yes, would pace oneself better if the field is more spread out following the swim.
David Fish
Feels like the event was cancelled and I didn’t earn my medal :(
Josh Reinecke
Obviously would have had less fuel in the tank. But the swim is good pace setter for the bike. Most people probably blew out on the Bike and had a tough run. Lack of foresight on planning the swim and alternative starts / routes. Move Durban 70.3 to another location.
Lesyl Potgieter
I am not good with swimming, but the Swim start is a good warm-up to a Triathlon race, so I missed it.  Also, we looked so much forward to swim in a warmer sea.  The delayed start due to the swim cancellation caused a later start to the Bike, followed by Running in midday heat - that was tough (not used to train in warmer temp due to cooler Cape Town weather lately).   As this was my 1st half-ironman, it was an anti-climax to not be able to swim after all the training-prep that went into swimming, and completing Durban70.3 in 2016 felt like unfinished business.  I will only feel satisfied that I have completed a 'full'-half Ironman, after my next 70.3-race that hopefully will include a Swim-leg too.  But, the Sea ruled on the day - I understand it was unsafe to let the age groupers swim and I'm glad the organisers made the right call on the day due to the rip currents and dangerous sea conditions.  The race could have started much worst, so I was just grateful that we could still take part in a great-fast Bike smooth surface-course & a half marathon Run.

Any other comments or a full story?

Dean Hopf
Durban in winter, the swim is always going to be a mess. They need to move the swim to a more protected area or else there will always be a massive chance of a cancelled swim.
Karla Ray
I was such a privilege to complete this race one year after breaking my pelvis and consequently suffering from 3 pulmonary embolisms.  To come back so strong and to be able to participate with my daughter is really special.  I owe so much to Britt Hyland and my inspirational fellow athletes at Tri4All :)
Nick Turner
They either need to change the swim venue, or introduce qualifying race which will allow stronger athletes to participate. Not prepared to pay the expensive fee on such high odds of cancellation.
Emma Alsop
Thanks ironman for a well organised event, thanks fatty for cheering on fatty, thanks ATC for the track sessions....! Oh and DC and the long bikes
Malcolm Rapson
Thanks to Embark and ATC for all the great raining and social activities
Crispin Barrett
Will only do the race again if the swim leg is guaranteed.
Colin Van Zyl
Apparel was poor and I would have paid extra for a decent back pack like full ironman. The one we got was crap. I race MTB and we get great clothing and bags. Something to think about
Kirsty Blackford
I would definitely participate in the Durban event again but I do think they need to look at changing the swim venue if logistics allow. 70:3 is an event that an average athlete can aspire to do. Swimming is often the weakest discipline and swimming 1.9kms in the Ocean is not for sissies. The fact that you have to get through big surf to the backline first is a challenge for a lot of people and if you battle on your entry & exit then all that hard training is for nothing and could be fatal. I know its Iron Man but we do not have the luxury of one in a dam or lake in SA. Safety must come first and after participating in the warm up swim on Saturday I was glad they cancelled it. The reports back from the pros were also a concern. Iron Man can be grateful that there were no casualties amongst them. As Stuart Marais tweeted 'It was a life or death' situation in the last 150 m…
Vasili Vass
I feel that I did not complete a 70.3 Ironman given that the swim was cancelled but totally understand and respect the decision made by the Race Director as I am sure I would have had to be pulled out of the water or drowned.
Event seemed well organised.
Was difficult to get to the recovery area after the finish line.
Mario Santana
A great event, well supported, Kudos to Paul Wolff for making the tough call. Need to go back and do the triathlon but happy I completed my first Ultra Biathlon
Melissa Groenink
They need to make a plan to move the swim south -  possibly from Addington Beach
Gerhard Kotze
Swimming conditions in Durban in winter could be same next year. Problem.
Clive Schulze
Fun event! Excited for my next one.
I believe the City of Durban could do more to get behind the event, similar to what East London has going.
Race registration - swift and organized. Best yet!
Poor expo, considering it is an Ironman event.
Very poor race briefing, once again, I believe the Ironman brand should be better.
Good call on the age group swim being cancelled, in hindsight the Pros shouldn't have swam either.
Swim location needs to chance to a more protected waters, rather than relying on good conditions.
A better bike start needs to be considered for future no swim starts. A first come first serve basis does not work if you are let into the bike rack pen through one gate. Athletes should have a seeding / similar to points accumulated for these events. Alternatively a Swim/Bike/Run times from other races need to be submitted for first timers.
Great Bike & run route.
Will be back for Durbs 70.3 IF the swim is changed to a better location.
Josh Reinecke
Will not do Durban 70.3 again and would not recommend it. EL is way, way better and PE conditions even more so.
Lesyl Potgieter
After so much anticipation for the race, the actual race day was a bit of an anti-climax.  Post-race: fell ill caught the flu (Cape Winter is real cold this year), but I was mentally (more than physically) over-exhausted after the race (immunity system down).  Taking some time-out to get better before starting to train for the next challenge.
