AGM 2017 - Feedback

Thank you very much to everyone who attended the ATC Annual General Meeting, which was held on Wednesday, 26 July 2017, at the Green Point Cricket Club.  There were forty ATC Members and six interested parties present.

The main topic for discussion was the proposed changes to the constitution, which are and will be required to register ATC as a not for profit voluntary association for public benefit.  All changes were approved and ATC will now proceed with this process.

You can view the new and previous versions of our constitution on our About Us Page.

Membership Fees & Levies
The proposed cub membership fees for 2017-2018 were presented and accepted with no objection.  The new membership fees will be effective from 1 January 2018.  The table below depicts our membership fees from 2014 to 2018.

ATC has two levies, which have been introduced over time to cover hard costs of our activities:

The Training Levy (R50 per season) was introduced in 2014 for canal swimmers to cover the costs of safety and access control equipment purchased for the canal swim.  When Green Point Athletics Track started charging us for lights in July this year, the committee decided to impose this levy on Track Runners as well.  Up to now we have been quite lenient in terms of enforcing this levy.  However, to date we have covered less than half of the major expenses incurred for these two training sessions.  We will therefore be stricter with this and will build a check into the sign in system to verify that members have paid the levy.  This levy will increase to R80 from the 1st of August 2017.

The Helpers Levy (ATC Assist, R100 per year), was approved at the 2016 AGM but has not been enforced yet.  From the 1st of August 2017, this levy will be orderable from our on-line shop and members will have a choice to either volunteer their services on two occasions during the year, or to pay the ATC Assist Levy.  These funds will enable us to hire casuals to assist in place of volunteers.

These levies will NOT apply to the ATC MS Junior, Student or Country Memberships.  However, Country members, who attend the Canal or Track sessions from time to time, will be requested to pay the Training Levy.  Pensioners are not required to pay the levies.

Why not include the levies in Membership Fees?
In light of the fact that ATC Membership fees are quite reasonable anyway, there was a suggestion to include the levies in the membership rate.  The committee has discussed this on a number of occasions and have decided against this for the following reasons:

Training Levy:  Our Canal Swim and Track sessions are crucial to the club and extremely valuable sessions to the members who make use of these.  However, not all members are able to benefit from these sessions, for various reasons.  The club incurs very specific hard costs to host these sessions and, whilst it is certainly worth the expense, it is not fair to burden non-participating members with these costs.

ATC Assist:  Whilst the funds generated from this levy will enable us to give persons with limited or no income a chance to earn money and learn new skills, we do not want to discourage members from offering their time and expertise in person.   If we were to pay for the skills and expertise we receive on a voluntary basis, this levy would be very high and unaffordable to most of our members.  The tasks we can outsource to casual workers are limited at this stage but we are hoping to grow and expand this as we attempt to educate with each project.

Canal Swimmers can purchase the Training Levy here.
Track Runners can purchase the Training Levy here.
Members who attend both sessions only have to purchase ONE of the above.

For the helpers levy, please purchase the ATC Assist product online.

ATC Committee
The current ATC Committee members will all be serving their second year in 2018.  Ilze Els has decided to step down from the Committee as she now resides in Stellenbosch.  We would like to take this opportunity to thank Ilze for her time and effort over the past two years.
The remaining committee consists of nine members, which is in line with our revised constitution:

STeve Attwell:  Chairman of ATC Multisport and Atlantic Triathlon Club.
Gert Wilkins:  Vice-Chairman of ATC Multisport and Chairman of ATC Running.
Barry Goliath:  Vice-Chairman of ATC Running and Head of ATC Development.
Paul Gordon-Brown: Treasurer.
Jacqueline Vockins: Secretary.
Anthony Dean
Garth Dorman
Kristin Milne
Travys Wilkins

New Balance and the Run Store
New Balance and the Run Store were present at the Club Time Trial and AGM to remind us that ATC Members receive a 20% discount on all New Balance Footwear and Apparel purchased from The RUN Store in Cape Town.  To qualify, take your ATC barcode tag along.
Lara Browne was one of the nine members who tried out the all-new FuelCore Sonic and Fresh Foam Zante shoes and won herself a pair of New Balance shoes and an assessment from the Run Store.

Garmin Forerunner 935 Competition
Thank you very much to Garmin SA and everyone who supported fund-raiser competition!  It generated quite a bit of activity on social media.  The winner was determined through a lucky draw at the AGM and Garth Dorman walked away with the brand new Garmin Forerunner 935 TRI Bundle.

General
The only matter raised under general was a suggestion to change our official running vest. The current version of our vest was launched in 2014 and it was designed to offer male and female fit.  We’ve had the length increased as most of our members prefer a snug fit.  Whilst we will probably never have a garment that is to everyone’s liking, it was felt that our running vest is still one of the better looking vests out there.  Changing the running vest will not be a simple process as it has to be approved by Western Province Athletics and cannot be similar to any of the other registered club vests.

We have also purchased a large batch of these vests this year so have a lot in stock.  We will therefore not be looking at changing our vest at this time.  However, we are currently busy with two initiatives in this regard:
·        We have received samples of a short sleeved technical running top, which resembles the vest and we will submit this to Western Province Athletics to be recognised as part of our official club running kit.
·        We have ordered samples of a fitted long sleeved spandex running top, which could be worn under the vest, either for warmth or protection from the sun.  These tops are expected to be available soon.

We will feed back on the above in due course.

New TRI Season – Embark Training Programs

August is here and that means it’s time for a new intake of Embark trainees, of all levels, to commence their group coached training aimed at completing a Sprint or Ironman 70.3 distance event early in the New Year.  Various programs launch this week with three information / orientation sessions:

Moms2tri and 50+ Group Training
Triathlon is trendy, versatile and a rapidly growing sport for all ages across the globe!  If you think you missed the boat in regards to your age, then keep reading!   Embark’s Moms2Tri and 50+ Program is designed to help moms and over 50 s get into multisport over the winter months and into summer.  This isn’t just for new moms, or only over 50s, but all people looking to get fit in a fun and safe environment during conventional ‘working’ hours.  Action packed sessions guarantee your fitness back in time for summer.

The program starts with an orientation session, on Tuesday 1 August, at 10am, at the Green Point Cricket Club.

IRONMAN 70.3 East London Training
If you are considering entering Ironman 70.3 East London in January 2018, or have already done so, then now’s the time to start thinking about training for it.  If you are currently swimming 400m nonstop, riding 40 Kms on the road and running 5-8 Kms, then you are at the level that Embark requires to begin with the group training in August.  If you are not currently at this level and require some help and motivation to get there, then get in contact with Embark and join the existing group that is currently on the build up program.

Summer Beginner Triathlon Program
This group of first timers will aim to complete their first sprint distance triathlon in February 2018.  A sprint distance triathlon is a 750m Swim, a 20 Km bike ride and a 5 Km run (a great challenge).
